No Holding Back, No Turning Back:  A Devotion

I have two grandsons that will start high school next year. It’s a big step moving forward, new beginnings, big dreams. It’s fun to dream and share our dreams with others, but sometimes we forget that every new chapter in life, as amazing as it is, comes with a price tag. There are things we must give up in order to experience the fullness of what is ahead for us. Sometimes those things are bigger than new teachers or changes in classes.

This is true when we decide to follow Jesus. In Luke 9: 23, Jesus urges us to count the cost. He makes no compromise when it comes to discipleship. “Then he said to them all: ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.’”

Being a disciple means giving up your life for life. No holding back. No turning back. Jesus wants every part of our lives to be saturated by His love and to bring Him glory, but that requires sacrifice. It’s easy to go to church once a week, but it’s hard to read the Word daily or commit to tithing when the future seems uncertain. It’s easy to listen to a sermon, but it’s hard not to cuss out the crazy guy on the road or gossip about our neighbor. It’s easy to post a verse on social media, but it’s hard to live out its truth in the midst of pain and struggle.

The things we have to give up and sacrifice may seem huge at the moment, but when we see it through the lens of God’s love, we will understand that nothing compares to living a life walking with Jesus.

Timothy’s Youth Service Projects

Mother’s Day weekend provided a meaningful backdrop for youth to complete service projects which have been in the planning stages for weeks.

On Saturday, Timothy’s Girls on the Run teams decorated rocks with inspirational messages and placed them along the St. Mary’s track. In addition, the girls weeded and picked up trash from the Infant Loss Garden located near the track, rounding up 10 bags of weeds & debris in 90 minutes! When posted on Facebook, over 700 “likes” thanked the girls for their commitment to serve the community in this way.

On Sunday, Timothy’s youth offered long-stemmed silk flowers to all women at Timothy’s services to celebrate Mother’s Day, thanking moms for all they do.

What is Pairs & Spares?

No, it is NOT a bowling group, as some like to tease! Timothy’s Pairs & Spares is a senior adult ministry for seniors 60 & older to enjoy fellowship and luncheons. After a long time of not meeting due to COVID, Pairs & Spares is excited to resume their gatherings.

Pairs & Spares meets monthly on the third Tuesday at noon, generally in the Fellowship Hall, except in June. In addition to a potluck luncheon, they enjoy a devotion, games, and entertainment.

The first gathering in over a year is scheduled for Tuesday, June 15, from 11:30am-2:30pm at Shelter House #1 in Blue Springs Park, 2204 SW Ave, off Highway 40 and 19th Street. Meat, drinks, and table service will be provided. Wear a mask, and bring a side dish and friends! Contact Janet Masters ( with questions.

Thank You, McClains

Timothy thanks Robin and Randy McClain who volunteered time yesterday to trim shrubs, pull weeds, and in general beautify the landscaping on the south side of RD Mize Campus. Your efforts are very much appreciated!

Volunteer Opportunity

Another opportunity for volunteers to offer their time and talents is coming on Friday, June 4, starting at 7am, for the rescheduled work day at the RD Mize playground. Tasks include removing the existing mulch and then spreading new dirt. Bring shovels, rakes, and gloves. Contact Louie Wilbers ( with questions. Thanks for your help!

Gratefully . . .

Below are excerpts from Missionary Barb Rebentisch’s recent letter to Timothy:

Dear Timothy Lutheran,
I am very grateful for the gift you sent on behalf of my work in Taiwan. I am keenly aware that my presence and work here would not be possible without your prayer and financial support. Thank you for your participation in the mission! I pray that God will restore you one hundred-fold the blessings you share with me.

God’s peace,
Barb Rebentisch

More Gratitude . . .

Timothy received the following letter from Rachel House this week in response to Timothy’s recent donations totaling $500, which were applied to their Baby Bottle drive.  Thank you, Timothy, for caring!

“Baby Bottle drives demonstrate the body of Christ coming together to make right something that has gone very wrong in our culture. By participating in this fundraiser, you have taken a stand with Rachel House to empower moms and dads to choose life for their children. Because of partners like you, we can provide free pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, resources and parenting classes for both moms and dads! Prepared parents make healthier choices for their children and strengthen the family unit, thereby having a positive impact in the communities where they live.

Thank you for participating in the 2021 Baby Bottle drive at your church. If you would like more information, please visit our website at
