As We Gather For Worship This Weekend

THEME: “Those Pesky Commandments”

CREATIVE TENSION: In the first reading, we hear those discouraging words from John, reminding us that loving God means keeping His commandments. But how can we do that? We struggle with them so badly and, truth be told, we’d much rather strike out on our own and do things our own way. But John points us to the One who helps us keep those commands. Jesus overcomes the world, which also means He overcomes our sinfulness. And now He leads us into a new life of obedience to what God’s perfect will is.

Timothy’s Baby STEPS Ministry

Timothy’s LWML Elizabeth Circle reminds the church that it organizes the Baby STEPS (Supporting Timothy’s Expectant ParentS) ministry. Guided by Jeremiah 1:5, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart,” this ministry supports and celebrates the new life with which God blesses our Timothy families through prayers, phone calls, and cards. The homecoming of a new infant is celebrated with a home visit and meals provided by the “Meals for Moms” volunteers within this ministry. In addition, each Timothy baby receives a new pair of booties, handmade by a volunteer, as a keepsake from the church. The booties are white to remind them of being washed clean at their baptism as God’s child.

Families are urged to contact the church office (816.228.5300) or Kaye Gray (816.585.6390 or if you would like to receive this Baby STEPS support. Likewise, if anyone would like to volunteer to visit families, lift them in prayer, make and/or deliver meals, or knit/crochet booties, please contact the church office or Kaye. Thank you!

Hillcrest Team Renovates Apartment

Timothy’s Hillcrest Team has been busy the past few weeks updating its apartment at Hillcrest Transitional Housing for future residents. And what a team effort it was, coordinated by Dan Sbisa, who also worked alongside the other volunteers!

Daryl & Becky Fowler, Ruth Sunderman, Tom Nowiszewski, and Joe & Sandy Sauter painted walls and trim before prepping the apartment for new floors. Then Joe laid the flooring, and Sandy provided finishing touches (base shoe). After multiple work sessions, the apartment transformation was complete!

Thanks to the entire Hillcrest Team for dedicating much time and effort on an ongoing basis to ensure Timothy’s apartment is a comfortable home for its residents.

It’s scholarship time! Do you have a student in grades 2-12 attending Timothy Lutheran School, Lutheran High—Kansas City, or St. Paul’s Lutheran High—Concordia? Deadline to apply is June 1, 2021. Contact Christy Yager (816.820.4730) with questions.

What Is LUMA??

The Lutheran Urban Missionary Agency (LUMA) serves the urban area churches and communities, empowering and equipping them to meet spiritual, social, and physical needs.

The agency’s auxiliary (LUMAA), a charitable missionary organization composed of LCMS members in Greater Kansas City, supports the work of LUMA. One area of support is the monthly ingathering, “Mission of the Month.” Examples of the various ingathering opportunities are family-sized, personal hygiene products and cleaning supplies; food for homeless pantries; clothing; school supplies; funding for VBS; and many other outreach programs.

You’re invited to the next auxiliary meeting! Make plans to attend on May 19th at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 5901 E. 135th St., Grandview, MO 64030. The ingathering for the May meeting is monetary gifts to support multiple food pantries in the urban area. Donations may be dropped off at the RD Mize front desk or TLS office or mailed to Lois Domsch (LUMAA rep for LWML), 3349 S. Scott Ave., Independence, MO 64052. Please submit checks, payable to LUMAA, by May 17 for delivery to the May 19 meeting. Thank you for continued support for this mission! Contact Lois ( or 816.461.7529) with questions.
