History of Timothy’s Annual Adam’s Army Blood Drive


If you began worshipping at Timothy since 2005, you may not know how the Annual Adam’s Army Blood Drive originated. What a tremendous honor it is to host this ministry each year in early June!

Adam, the oldest of Jeff and Mary Reed’s five children, was a lifetime member of Timothy. Just before his 13th birthday, Adam was diagnosed with leukemia. He spent almost 2 ½ years in treatment, undergoing two bone marrow transplants, many rounds of chemo, and radiation. He entered his eternal heavenly home in May 2005, at the age of 15.

The Timothy family was a huge support to Adam and the Reed family throughout his fight. “Adam’s Army” started as a group of church friends and family who faithfully lifted him up in prayer, sent cards, visited, provided meals, organized fundraisers, and performed countless other acts of kindness and support.

After Adam went to heaven, his sister Jenna suggested that the family host a blood drive in his memory since blood and platelet transfusions were so vital during Adam’s treatment. It is a way to remember Adam while helping others in need.

The first blood drive was held at Timothy in May 2006, one year after Adam’s death. It has been held each year since then, and the 2020 Adam’s Army Blood Drive marks its 15th anniversary. The Timothy family continues to support the blood drive, and it has become the largest community-based drive in the Kansas City area.

You can help save lives by making an appointment on Timothy’s website for this year’s drive on SundayJune 7, from 9am-3pm, in the Family Life Center at RD Mize. Donors must make an appointment; no walk-ins are allowed this year due to the COVID-19 considerations.

The first 50 donors will receive an extra bonus of a commemorative t-shirt, continuing the annual giveaway tradition. How many of us have all 15 shirts? Next Generation Congregational Study Update

For the past six months, Timothy participated in various phases of the Next Generation Congregational Readiness Study to re-visit and re-evaluate the visioning process adopted by the congregation in 2005. Members prayerfully and thoughtfully embraced each step of this study to provide input through attendance and discussion at cottage meetings, submission of oral and written comments, and completion of a congregational survey.

Timothy received the final report, as prepared by Volunteer Consultant Dave Kuerschner, this week. The Next Generation Steering Committee, Executive Board and Board of Elected Elders will study the findings soon. We look forward to sharing the information with the congregation soon.

Grocery Drives Much Appreciated

Timothy’s efforts to provide non-perishables and household supplies to those in need are greatly appreciated. On May 2, staff at Hillcrest Transitional Housing in Lee’s Summit were overwhelmingly ecstatic to fill their shelves with Timothy’s two pickups full of goods. The residents at Welcome Inn in Blue Springs have appreciated two deliveries to date with the next scheduled for June 10. Did you see the front-page article about Timothy’s community efforts in the Examiner on May 13?

Don’t forget that we have another opportunity to reach out with a “Drive-By-And-Drop-Off” grocery drive to Jesu el Buen in Kansas City, one of the ministries receiving a regular tithe from Timothy, on Saturday, May 30, from 10am-noon, parking lots of both campuses. Pastor Eberhart suggests that the most-needed donations include canned soups, canned vegetables, canned fruit, cereal, pasta, pasta sauces, and bottles of hand soap, if available. Their food pantry currently serves over 100 families each week, so whatever we can provide will be much appreciated.

Men’s Zoom Bible Study Cancelled This Week – This week’s Men’s Bible study has been cancelled due to a special meeting Pastor Rod will be attending. Watch for information on next week’s study.
