When Everything Hurts, Sing Louder:
A Devotion

There will be two funerals in my life this week, and the breaking keeps coming. It’s cold, and I am trapped in the house once again. I want to pull the blanket back over my head. But the breaking keeps coming. Just when I think it’s done, it isn’t. Maybe when the vaccine is released to everyone or spring comes, then the breaking will stop. But the breaking will only stop when God allows it. So when the breaking comes, I let it. I ask God for eyes to see my sin, a voice to confess it, and a heart that is willing to bend into the character of Christ. One thing that helps me endure this season of suffering is worship.

I sing. I sing loud the songs of Jesus. I don’t belt out a tune to drown out my feelings, but as a way to feel my feelings with Christ. I sing louder to remind my own soul that Jesus is stronger, safer, and nearer in the breaking than ever before. God is about my healing—our healing. Isaiah 53:5:  But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed.

The breaking isn’t to destroy us but to help us. We worship as a way to see through the dark and remember God is still on the throne. The music mirrors the longings of our hearts. When the world is fragile, we can sing. When relationships split and the church struggles, we can sing. When we spiral out of control, we can sing even louder. Songs keep our hearts fixed on truth, so we sing over and over again. We sing when we are breaking, but we are also being healed.

Confirmands’ Faith Stories: “A Two-Fer”

God’s blessings to twins Morgan and Malinda Anderson who shared their faith stories in worship this past Sunday. Morgan’s chosen Bible verse is Matthew 11:28 while Malinda’s is Romans 8:38-39. Click on their photos below to hear how this scripture applies to their lives today.

A New Session of GriefShare

When a loved one dies, the grief that follows can often be confusing and overwhelming. Support is available through GriefShare, which features Biblical teaching on grief and recovery topics. Each session includes a DVD seminar and group discussion; a workbook helps with note-taking, journaling and grief study.

Timothy’s next GriefShare session begins March 4; sessions are offered on Thursdays from 6:30-8pm in the Fireplace Room (302), RD Mize Campus. There’s no charge for this program, but the cost of the workbook is $20. To register, contact Nany Nowiszewski (816.228.5300 Ext. 8042 or

Next Generation Update

At its regular monthly meeting last night, Timothy’s Executive Board set next Monday, Feb. 15, for the pastors and elected lay leaders to meet via Zoom. Each group has received the vision and mission focus document created and approved by the Next Generation Strategic Planning Committee. The purposes of the Zoom meeting are to garner a consensus from the entire leadership for the official adoption of the document and establish next steps moving forward to share with the congregation for its approval. Please keep this process in your prayers.

Appreciation from Missionary Partner

Dear Saints at Timothy, Blue Springs:

Thank you for your ongoing support of the work God has given me here in Taiwan. I’m grateful beyond words for your partnership in this ministry!

I finished editing the “What About” pamphlet series in Chinese. Last week, I finished converting some computer audio files and uploading them to the website. Some of the Chinese audio files are study notes for the book of Matthew while others are a daily devotion series.

God’s peace,

A Note from Hillcrest

Dear Members of Timothy Lutheran Church,

Thanks so much for the gifts to Hillcrest and our work with homeless families. With your help, we are able to shine a light on the pathway to a brighter future.
